#13 - True Food Kitchen - 4/15/09

MMDT #13 Picked By: Sophie O-Z

True Food Kitchen
2502 E. Camelback Road
Phoenix, AZ 85016

Totally Organic: Josh, Christy, Kyle, Janet, Ross, Lauren, Vince, Holly, Sophie, Dave, Bailey
Haters-of-the-Environment: Ian K.

Talk about your tax day stimulus --- a record-breaking size group made for a record-breaking size bill. This place is all about health and the environment. Even the men's urinal boasts how much water it's saving. Pretentiously delicious!

Cool vibe, fancy refreshers/beverages, pizzas, salmon, tacos, miso, lots of vegeterian dishes and gluten-free options. And solid service by Steven.

Afterwards, some delicious fro-yo at neighboring Mojo. Good treats but what's up with selling stuff by the ounce? (Unless you're a drug dealer. Maybe those were 'magic brownies' among the toppings.)

Total bill with tip for 11 people: $294 - $26/person

Next to pick -- Mr. Klee on June 17th. If "The Tour" gets much bigger we're going to need a tour bus for the band. (side-note: Does that mean we get groupies? Awe-some!)

Let's hear some reviews, Tourer-ists!

Christy and her "pina colada" - Josh and his "Green Arnie"

Holly and a concoction

Vince + Miso Soup = Unbridled Joy

Bailey's - Shaved turkey, provolone, tomato, cucumbers, grapes & yogurt dressing on warm pita (with sweet potato hash)

Josh's pizza - wild shrimp, caramelized onion, roasted peppers & goat cheese

Sophie's something-or-other

Lauren & Vince - curry chicken with rice noodles

Dave - Ahi sliders

Christy - steak tacos & anasazi beans

Vince demonstrating the Dyson Airblade. Yes, it's better than yours.

For appetizers I tried the organic tomato & olive oil cheeseless pizza and the hummus (with greek salad). Hummus was terrific.

Meal was the wild shrimp pizza -- I'd call it above average. Maybe the slighest bit soggy?

Tried the Green Arnie (a cocktail of Macha Green Tea & honey lemonade) --- not bad but not worth four bucks. None of the specialty drinks blew me away.

Thought Dave had the best meal with the ahi sliders or Vince with the curry.

Highlights of the night included talk of AIDS spray (it exists!) and the fact that Janet tried to pick my Mom up a night early for MMDT. I guess she needs more than 2 months notice? (Love you JC)

Service at the restaurant very acceptable for a party this big.

It ain't cheap and it's a little in love with its own message of health/sustainability but we all went home full.

For a Wednesday evening True Food Kitchen was very busy. The large number of people combined with the open feeling of TFK led to a very loud meal. With a table for twelve it was impossible to have one conversation amongst the group without shouting. Overall the atmosphere was nice. The concept of sustainability seemed to be followed in every aspect of the dining experience.
All of the dishes were good, nothing stood out as being great. The flourless chocolate cake Janet ordered for desert was very good. The garlic hummus appetizer was delicious. I had the gluten-free spaghetti with roasted shrimp for my entree. The meal was good with a proper size portion. I became grotesquely stuffed when I began to scavenge from everyone else's plate.
Service was very accommodating and friendly. Prices were a little on the high side, but not outrageous for fresh local ingredients.
I would recommend True Food Kitchen for the overall experience, but not specifically for the food.

My favorite part of this adventure was Janet showing up 24 hours and 15 minutes early! I had the salad with goat cheese and chicken. Pricey for just a salad. The tiny chicken was hidden under the lettuce. Nice to have new attendees, Bailey and Klee....The hand dryer in the ladies' room was awesome....very Jetsons! Parking was easy with the valet. Always tough to find a spot at the Biltmore. Janet and I skipped the Yuppie Yogurt, but it was, as always, a good time with our diverse and ever growing membership.
